From the readings and what I have read I can agree strongly with the articles from experience. From my experience as a regular D and D player and game maker i understand the importance of emotion and choice in a game whether it be in a video game or a board game. As an example i will use d and d(
dnd website) Dungeons and dragons is completely based on imagination and dice rolls and as a game maker its up to you to be responsible for the characters that are playing in your world/campaign and how dice rolls will effect there characters. Its completely up to the game master to decide the fate of the characters and it all depends on the rolls those players make in and out of combat. Story wise the world need to be vibrant, interesting story, have a wealth of character development and have a seance of realism to it. If the character dies there are very few ways that they can be brought back and that is at the discretion of the game master to decide, and that is why in dungeon and dragons get attached to the charterers and try to do everything in there power to keep them alive but in the end it all up to luck and a few bad dice rolls can lead to a charterer death.
A planned character death can impact the emotion of a whole group of players and completely change the mood of the group playing, this is the core reason of why story is so important in games.
In video games story is pivotal to its success and without a good story the game will be stale and have be boring to play unless the game is based on mechanics rather then story. A good example of a story driven video game is the legend of zelda series. The base story is the hero is reincarnated in separate timelines, he has to save the princess from the bad guy and save the world from destruction. The games relatively same basis for the story but each game has its own unique story line that differs in each game. This is what hooks players and why the game is such a successful title among most of the gaming community.(
